Católica through to the next stage

Univerisdad Católica became the first Chilean side to qualify for the next stage of the Copa Libertadores after defeating fellow Chileans Unión Española 2-1 on Thursday night in the Estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo. The win also saw los cruzados top the group at the end of the group stage after Vélez Sarsfield defeated Caracas FC 3-0 in the other group game.

It wasn’t easy going for the home side as Unión Española, who had already been eliminated from the tournament, took the lead in the 47th minute via a Kevin Harbottle strike but this was quickly cancelled out by a neat finish by Pablo Calandria after Marcelo Cañete was allowed to stroll through the Unión’s penalty area to set him up. The home side finished the job off in the 79th minute as a tame Marcelo Cañetes strike took a deflection off defender Giovanny Espinoza to wrong foot Eduardo Lobos in goal and find the back of the net.
