Late goal ends Católica’s Libertadores dream

The man many will blame for Catolica's exit

Universidad Católica’s run in the Copa Libertadores came to an end after losing 3-2 on aggregate to Peñarol after the second leg of their quarter final ended 2-1 in front of their home fans.

For all intents and purposes it looked like the match was heading to penalties after goals to Fernando Meneses and Roberto Gutiérrez brought the tie back on level terms. However Católica’s inability to deal with a long, high ball over the two matches again cost them as Fabián Estoyanoff ghosted in at the back post in the 85th minute to give the visitors the aggregate lead in the tie and the all important away goal. Five minutes plus stoppage time wasn’t enough for the home side to grab the two goals they needed and their continental campaign for this season came to an end.
