Top two reach final

Arch rivals Universidad de Chile and Universidad Católica ensured that we would be watching a clasico universitario in the final as both teams won the second legs of their semi-final clashes, although the manner of the victories were extremely different.

Universidad de Chile stormed into the final in emphatic style after thrashing O’Higgins 7-1 in the second leg of their semi-final in the Estadio Nacional on Saturday night. Going into the match O’Higgins needed to win by two goals to progress to the final and got off to the start they wanted when Enzo Gutiérrez found the back of the net after only eight minutes. Unfortunately for the Rancaguans this goal unleashed a devastating response from their opponents, who scored four goals in the next twenty-six minutes to put the tie well and truly beyond doubt.

Despite leading 4-1 at the break La “U” didn’t let up in the second half as they put three more past an O’Higgins team that looked at all sea. Adding to their misery were straight red cards to Mauricio Arias and Benjamín Vidal in the last fifteen minutes for what were for little more than acts of frustration. In the grand scheme of things they had little impact on the final result.

After losing their first match 2-1 against Unión La Calera, Universidad Católica needed a win to make sure that they would meet their arch rivals in the final. In the end it was a solitary goal that saw them progress as the higher ranked team after the tie finished 2-2. The goal came in the 46th minute after Enzo Andía powered home a decisive header from a free kick. La Calera can probably consider themselves a little unlucky as the foul for the free kick from which the goal resulted was very soft. But in many respects their inability to find the back of the net throughout the season came back to haunt them as they failed to find the equaliser that would have sent them through. In didn’t all go to plan for los cruzados as Francisco Silva picked up a second yellow card in the dying moments of the match, which will mean he will miss the first leg of the final.
