Copa Sudamericana 2011: Bella Vista 1-1 U.Católica

Pablo Calandria celebrates the equaliser

Universidad Católica kicked off its 2011 Copa Sudamerica campaign with a one-all draw inMontevideo against Uruguayan side, Bella Vista.

The visitors went behind in controversial circumstances in the 24th minute courtesy of an Ignacio Nicolini spot kick after referee Leandro Vuaden ruled that Enzo Andía had brought down José Varela in the penalty area. Replays clearly suggest that they there was no contact and that Varela was the master of his own downfall. Also a bone of contention was if there was contact that it occurred inside the penalty at all. Twelve minutes later los cruzados got their equaliser via Pablo Calandria who finished off a brilliant run by Felipe Gutiérrez.

The return leg will be played on the 16th August.
