Universidad Católica grabbed the advantage in their latest Copa Sudamericana outing after defeating fellow Primera Divsion side, Iquique 2-1 in the Estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo.
The home side controlled most of the play on the night and took a deserved lead on 37 minutes when inspiration captain Mirovan Mirosevic powered home a header from close to the edge of the area. Shortly after the break los cruzados doubled their lead as Enzo Andía got on the end of a well-taken Francisco Pizarro free kick after the aforementioned Mirosevic had been crudely fouled by Rubén Taucare. Iquique pulled a goal back in the dying moments as Michael Ríos capitalised on Católica’s inability to clear their area after an Iquique corner.
The return leg will be played next week in the Tierra de Campeones.
