Universidad de Chile continued their dominance of the 2011 Clausura season with its eighth consecutive win whilst their nearest rivals Universidad Católica and Colo Colo both stumbled with shock losses.
La “U” perfect record was maintained with 3-1 win over Cobresal although they left it late with all their goals coming in the last twenty minutes with Francisco Castro’s brace and Eduardo Vargas doing the damage for the home side after Miguel Ángel Cuellar had put the visitors ahead in the 40th minute.
Universidad de Chile now has an eight point lead over second-placed Colo Colo, who crashed to a 3-0 loss to Unión La Calera in the last match of the round. To make things worse for los albos was that they finished the match nine men after Sebastián Toro and Mauro Olivi both receiving red cards although they can’t be really used as an excuse as a brace to Lucas Simón and another to Ramón Fernández had already done the damage.
Whilst Colo Colo’s loss could be considered somewhat of a shock, Universidad Católica’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Ñublense was definitely unexpected as goals Alí Manouchehri and Lucas Concistre gave the Chillán side their second win of the season. Also capitalising on the losses of Universidad Católica and Colo Colo was Audax Italiano whose 2-1 win over Universidad de Concepción in the first match of the round propelled them into third spot on the table, sandwiched in between those two aforementioned teams.
