Universidad de Chile has progressed to the Round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana after its match against Uruguayan side Nacional was suspended shortly after half time with los azules leading 2-0 on the night and 3-0 on aggregate.
Leading the tie 1-0 after the first leg, Universidad de Chile got off to the perfect start against their Uruguayan opponents with two goals in two minutes courtesy of Eduardo Vargas and Matías Rodríguez in the eleventh and twelfth minutes respectively. Both goals were the culmination of sweeping counter attacking goals that pretty much killed off the tie.
It was a lead they held until half time and when they returned to the field that’s where all the drama unfolded as a linesman was hit by a projectile thrown by the home fans as los azules looked to take a corner. Play was halted as the linesman was stretchered from the field and despite the protestations of Nacional, Paraguayan referee Antonio Arias suspended the match.
Next up for Universidad de Chile is a clash with Brazilian giants, Flamengo.
