La “U” sets new domestic record

Esteban Paredes celebrates his 100th goal

It is becoming somewhat of a broken record but again Universidad de Chile won to set a new Chilean record whilst Audax Italiano and Colo Colo try to keep pace and Universidad Católica’s form slump continues.

Universidad de Chile set a new domestic record on the weekend as they defeated O’Higgins 3-0 to become the first Chilean side to win nine consecutive matches. The previous record was obviously eight consecutive wins which was achieved by Cobreloa in 1978 and Colo Colo in 2007. Goalscorers for La “U” were Francisco Castro and Eduardo Vargas, who scored a brace with O’Higgins not being helped by the sending off of Alejando López in the 25th minute.

The two teams whose record Universidad de Chile surpassed, Cobreloa and Colo Colo met in the second last match of the round with los albos running out 1-0 winners courtesy of Esteban Paredes’ 100th professional goal. The win leaves Colo Colo eight points their arch rivals.

Sitting one point Colo Colo is Audax Italiano who defeated Unión La Calera 2-1 to kick off the round with Matías Campos Toro and Facundo Pereyra getting on the scoresheet for the home side after Ramon Fernández had opened the scoring for the visitors. Four further back from los italianos is Universidad Católica, who slumped to their third loss in four games at the hands of Santiago Morning. Morning, who are in one of the automatic relegation spots (something I will explain in more detail later), grabbed all three points courtesy of Paraguayan Ever Cantero’s 87th minute winner. Ñublense, who are in the other automatic relegation spot, also had a win as they defeated Unión San Felipe 2-1.
