Universidad Católica’s recent run of bad form continued as they lost 2-0 at home to Argentinean side, Vélez Sarsfield in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16 clash.
Católica, who have obviously decided to focus on rectifying their recent poor league form, fielded a largely second string side against a Vélez side whose form at home hasn’t been anything to write home about either. In many ways it was a stark contrast to their earlier encounters this year in the Copa Libertadores
The fact that it was a weakened team meant that Católica was rather disjointed in attack with los cruzados looking most dangerous from set pieces. Vélez for their part were happy to hit on the counter-attack and it was two perfectly executed counter-attacks that resulted in goals to Guillermo Franco and Iván Bella in the 15th and 42nd minutes respectively. The second half was largely uneventful although Católica did have a Hans Martínez goal ruled out for offside in the 61st minute.
The return leg will be played on the 20th October.
