Comprehensive clásico wins

Two clásicos, two comprehensive wins. That was story of the twelfth round as both Universidad Católica and Cobreloa both put their opponents to the sword in their respective clásicos. Meanwhile runaway leaders Universidad de Chile got back onto the winner’s list and Audax Italiano moved into second with an important win.

Way back last Wednesday, Universidad de Chile kicked off the round with a hard fought 3-2 win over Unión La Calera. Los azules, who had drawn their last two matches, had an 87th minute goal from Francisco Castro to be thankful for getting them all three points.  The win puts them ten points clear of Audax Italiano who defeated O’Higgins 1-0 in the last match of the round courtesy of a 37th minute Fabián Benítez goal.

Equal on points with Audax Italiano but third on goal difference is Colo Colo, who crashed to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of a resurgent Universidad Católica in the clásico albo-cruzado. Much like their mid-week Copa Chile win los cruzados scored all their goals in the first half with captain Milovan Mirosevic scoring a double. In the weekend’s other clásico between Cobreloa and Cobresal, the former ran out comfortable 3-0 winners with the result putting them into fourth position whilst the latter dropped to seventh on the table.

Turning our attention to the relegation battle, Ñublense moved out of bottom position with 2-1 win over Universidad de Concepción, who have well and truly been dragged into the relegation dogfight following the result. Interestingly enough Ñublense is sitting in eight position on the Clausura table and could see playoff action on two fronts come the end of the year. With diablos rojos moving out of the bottom position on the General Table, their position was taken by Santiago Morning who drew 1-all with Unión San Felipe. Joining Universidad de Concepción in the relegation playoff zone are Santiago Wanderers, who lost 2-0 at home to La Serena, a win which sees la granates move into fifth position on the Clausura table.
