Universidad de Chile took a giant step towards the quarter-finals of the Copa Sudamericana after defeating Flamengo 4-0 in the Estadio Olímpico Joao Havelange in the first leg of their Round of 16 clash.
It was a dominant display from La U away from home and in the process became the first Chilean side to score four goals against a Brazilian side in a continental tournament in Brazil. Despite having scored four goals, los azules can feel a little agrieved that scoreline wasn’t even more in their favour as they had two perfectly legitimate goals ruled out. Getting on the scoresheet for the visitors were José Rojas, Gustavo Lorenzetti and Eduardo Vargas with a brace.
Universidad de Chile were helped by the sending off of Airton for the home side in the 26th minute for a rash challenge but this was countered somewhat by the straight red given to Francisco Castro in the 50th minute for what seemed like an accidental elbow to his opponent.
The return leg will be played next Wednesday in the Estadio Nacional.
