Clásicos are often built up to such an extent that in the end they often end up being non-events. This weekend past saw two clásicos, with the contrast between the two being polar opposite with the clásico universitario was a scoreless draw whilst the clásico de colonias was a goal feast. The weekend’s matches also saw Ñublense become the first team to be relegated to Primera B.
The weekend’s first clásico was the clásico de colonias between Unión Española and Audax Italiano, where the former ran out 5-2 winners helped largely by a hat-trick from Leandro Monje, who scored two of his three goals in a frenetic first half which saw five of the game’s seven goals scored in the first thirty minutes. The win was a huge boost for los hispanos as it all but guaranteed them post-season playoff action whilst for their opponents it meant that are equal on points with Cobreloa and La Serena, ten points behind Universidad de Chile.
With many of their key players coming off both national duty and last week’s Copa Sudamericana action, Universidad de Chile took a largely understrength team into the clásico universitario against Universidad Católica. What transpired was a largely uneventful match that ended 0-0, with not even a sending off to get people talking. The result leaves Católica secure in a playoff position with the final position to be determined largely by next week’s results.
Ñublense became the first team to be automatically relegated from the Primera Division after they went down 3-1 to Unión La Calera in the last match of the round. This will be the first time since 2006 that the Chillian based team will find themselves in the Primera B. With one automatic relegation spot already decided, Santiago Morning will need a minimum of a win in the final round and for other results to go their way to survive in the top flight after they lost 3-0 to fellow relegation candidates Universidad de Concepción.
