A goal eleven minutes from full time gave Universidad de Chile a crucial 1-all draw with Brazilian side, Vasco da Gama in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana semi-final in Rio de Janeiro.
It was a fairly brisk opening it was the home side that had the better of the exchanges and they deservedly took the lead in the 33rd minute as Bernardo finished expertly after getting on the end of a pass that deflected wickedly off Charles Aránguiz. Sensing that his team was getting overrun in midfield, Universidad de Chile manager Jorge Sampaoli substituted Gustavo Lorenzetti for Matías Rodríguez almost immediately after the goal. The change had an almost impact as the introduction of Rodríguez had los azules looking much better than they had in the first thirty minutes or so.
The second half was a huge contrast to the first as the home side couldn’t maintain the fast start as the visitors inched their way back into the contest and it was in the 79th minute that they got a much need equaliser as Osvaldo González headed home a long range free kick from Marcelo Díaz.
The return leg is to be held next Wednesday in the Estadio Nacional.
