Coming off their demolition of Godoy Cruz in their last Copa Libertadores outing Jorge Sampaoli’s were full of confidence going into their clash with Uruguayan giants, Peñarol. However it was the home side that got on the score sheet first in the 22nd minute as Nicolás Freitas fired home from the edge of the area as La U failed to deal with a long throw. The goal came after a period of sustained pressure from the home side as they looked to Marcelo Zalayeta as their main attacking threat. Peñarol’s lead was short lived as the visitors equalised twelve minutes later as Junior Fernándes continued his recent run of scoring heavily in the Copa Libertadores as he got on the end of a deflected shot to volley expertly past Peñarol’s keeper Fabián Carini. Try as they might neither team could break the deadlock with the result leaving the Uruguayans in last position in the group and in serious danger of not progressing to the knockout stage as they did last year.
Both teams will face each other again in three weeks in Santiago.
