Copa Libertadores 2012: U. de Chile 2-1 Peñarol

Matías Rodríguez was the hero for Universidad de Chile, scoring both goals as los azules defeated Peñarol 2-1 in their Group 8 Copa Libertadores with the second coming in the last minute of the match.

Universidad de Chile got exactly the start they wanted against their Uruguayan opponents as Rodríguez opened the scoring in the second minute after Peñarol goalkeeper Fabián Carini palmed a Junior Fernandes cross straight into the path of the onrushing midfielder. La U dominated much of the early proceedings and had a chance to go two up after Eugenio Mena was brought down in the area for a penalty. Unfortunately for the home side captain José Rojas skied the resultant penalty well over the crossbar. The missed penalty appeared to deflate los azules as their opponents got themselves back into the encounter.

It wasn’t until the second half that Peñarol got the goal they were looking for as Universidad de Chile goalkeeper Jhonny Herrera was unable to keep out a Carlos Valdez  header from a corner in the 51st minute. And for the remainder of the match it looked like the Uruguayans would get their second point of the campaign before Matías Rodríguez slammed home the winner in the 91st minute after another mistake from Carini.

The win sees Universiad de Chile move to second place in the table on seven points, one behind group leader Atletcio Nacional.
