Going into the match knowing full well that they had qualified for the next stage of the competition it was the hope of los hispanos that a win would guarantee top position in the group. In the early stages of the matches the visitors definitely looked like a team looking for the win as they dominated possession and were duly rewarded for their efforts in the 12th minute as Emiliano Vechio stroked home a beautiful free kick.
Unión’s lead was relatively short lived as ten minutes later Junior equalised from the penalty spot courtesy of Sherman Cárdenas. Seven minutes later the home side were down to ten men as goalkeeper Carlos Rodríguez was given his marching orders for handling outside the area as he attempted to deny Mauro Díaz a goalscoring opportunity. The man disadvantage didn’t appear to bother the home side as they took the lead in the 34th minute again from the penalty spot, this time courtesy of Luis Páez. For the remainder of the match Unión dominated the play but couldn’t find their way through a resolute Junior defence.
