Three out of the four quarter final first legs are out of the way and at this stage it looks like only Unión Española can have some confidence going into the return leg after a convincing win over Universidad Católica. In the other two games the tie between Colo Colo and Iquique is equally poised after a dramatic draw whilst O’Higgins take a slender goal advantage Unión La Calera
The quarter finals kicked off with a bang as a last minute Mauro Olivi equaliser saw Colo Colo draw 3-3 with Iquique in the Estadio Monumental. The goal could prove to be a much needed lifeline going into the second leg on Saturday. Colo Colo got off the start they wanted in front of the home fans as Esteban Paredes opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Iquique hit back twelve minutes later as Rodrigo Díaz scored from a free kick. Following their goal Iquique had the better of proceedings and took the lead in the 38th minute courtesy of Cristián Bogado. Following the break it was again Paredes who the game back of level terms as he headed home in the 49th minute. The goal gave los albos some much need confidence but it was Iquique who again grabbed the lead via Boris Rieloff in the 61st minute. Just when it looked like Iquique would be taking an advantage back to Estadio Tierra de Campeones up popped Mauro Olivi to grab the equaliser in third minute of stoppage time.
Three goals in a devastating period saw Unión Española defeat Universidad Católica 3-0 in the second of Wednesday’s quarter finals. In their three encounters this season in both the regular season and the Copa Libertadores los hispanos had failed to beat their opponents but goals to Sebastián Jaime, Fernando Cordero and Emanuel Herrera saw them triumph when it counted the most. The only blot on the home side’s copy book was the sending off of goalkeeper Eduardo Lobos shortly after his side’s third goal. The return leg will be played on Saturday in the Estadio San Carlos.
Thursday’s only quarter final clash saw O’Higgins defeat Unión La Calera 1-0 in the Estadio Nicólas Chahuán to take the advantage going into Sunday’s return leg in El Teniente. The first half was one of few chances and it wasn’t until the second half that the match opened up as La Calera looked to take advantage of the pace of Lucas Simón. However it was the visitors who scored the only goal of the match in the 75th minute from former calerano, Ramón Fernández headed home from a well taken free kick.
