After what seems like an eternity Universidad de Chile has finally joined Colo Colo, Union Espanola and O’Higgins in the semi-finals of the Apertura season after defeating Cobreloa 2-1 in the second leg of their quarter-final clash, taking the tie 4-1 on aggregate.
Cobreloa were always facing an uphill task needing to beat their opponents by more than three goals to advance to the semi-finals and that task got even greater in the 41st minute when a brilliant individual effort from Ángelo Henríquez put Universidad de Chile made it 3-0 on aggregate. Henríquez, who has reportedly been signed by Manchester United, took down a Jhonny Herrera goal kick and then held off two opponents before firing home.
Not long after the break Cobreloa pulled one back courtesy of Juan Abarca but from their muted celebrations that they knew they couldn’t get back into the contest. Seventeen minutes before full time Roberto Cereceda put the final nail in the coffin with a strike from the edge of the area after La U capitalised on a defensive error by their opponents.
