For the third and for the second time in three years, Universidad de Chile failed to make it past the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores after a 0-0 with Boca Juniors saw them lose 2-0 on aggregate to the Argentinean giants.
With La U needing at least two goals at least to get back into the tie it was the visitors it was the visitors who had the best chance of the opening minutes as Juan Roman Riquelme hit the crossbar with a sublime volley from a Pablo Mouche cutback. The aforementioned Mouche was causing plenty of problems for La U, using his pace to exploit the high line of his opponents but his finishing let him down. Junior Fernandes had the best chance for the home side in the first half, with his header from a Marcelo Díaz free kick being turned round the post by Boca ‘keeper Agustín Orión.
It was Díaz who was causing the most problems for the visitors with the midfielder hitting the crossbar from a free kick in the 53rd before forcing a a great save from Orión seven minutes later with a fierce drive from just outside the penalty area. Universidad de Chile had a few chances in the dying moments with the Peruvian Raúl Ruidíaz repeating the efforts of his team mate by also hitting the crossbar in a sure sign that it wasn’t going to be third time lucky for the Chileans.
