O’Higgins grabbed the slightest of advantages in the 2012 Apertura final after defeating Universidad de Chile 2-1 in the first leg in front of their home fans in Rancagua.
The match was played in very cold conditions and it was the home side who got off to the perfect start as a Matías Rodríguez error gifted the ball to Rodrigo Rojas inside the area before the Paraguayan delightfully chipped Jhonny Herrera from an acute angle as the clock ticked over to sixty seconds. After the opener the visitors maintained the pressure with Julio Barroso almost doubling the advantage as he hit the crossbar with a header. But it was Universidad de Chile who were next on the scoresheet as Guillermo Marino volleyed home a Paulo Magalhaes cross to equalise in the 28th minute and the scores remained level going into the half time break.
Following the restart la celeste maintained their efforts of the first but it wasn’t until the 71st that they grabbed what was to be the winner as Alejandro López was able to slot home after some excellent build up from the home side. O’Higgins had numerous chances to score a third through César Fuentes and Enzo Gutiérrez whilst for the visitors Marino also had a chance to level things up.
The return leg will be played on Monday at the Estadio Nacional.
