Draws and red cards were the main talking points of the opening round of the Clausura season with five of the seven matches ending with the points shared whilst nine red cards were handed out. For the record only Palestino and Colo Colo managed to pick up wins to start off their Clausura campaigns.
The Clausura opened in La Serena only four days after Universidad de Chile became champions of the Apertura competition with the home side sharing the spoils with Rangers in a 1-1 draw.
In a battle between the two lowest placed teams from the Apertura season, Cobresal had three players given red cards in their clash with Unión San Felipe. Despite finishing with eight men, Cobresal still managed a 0-0 draw with their opponents. Each of the teams will need to improve their performances to avoid the possibility of relegation to the Primera B at the end of the year.
Cobresal coach Oscar del Solar was furious after the match, claiming that “Before each expulsion, one of our players was fouled.” He added, “It does not feel just, it is not common to have so many expulsions.”
In the clásico de colonias between Unión Española and Audax Italiano it was a high scoring affair, with the two teams sharing the spoils in a 3-3 draw with all six goals coming within the first fifty-seven minutes.
In the debut of Martin Lasarte as coach of Universidad Católica that proved the most disappointing start to the season with team of the former manager of Real Sociedad unable overcome Palestino, failing to be a threat in either attack or defense and ended up losing 1-0.
New Colo Colo coach Omar Labruna was able to breathe easy after a last minute goal from Carlos Muñoz gave them a 1-0 victory in Iquique. In the two other matches Santiago Wanderers hosted Huachipato in a 1-1 draw, while neither Universidad de Concepción or Unión La Calera could find the back of the net.
