Iquique made an impressive debut in international competitions as it defeated Nacional 2-0 in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana clash in the Estadio Tierra de Campeones.
The home side got off a good start dominating their more fancied opponents with Rodrigo Díaz pulling the strings in the Iquique midfield and it was the Argentinean who had the best chance in the opening minutes when he sent a free kick just wide. It wasn’t until the 40th minute that the home side got the reward for their dominance as Sebastián Ereros fired home from well inside area after some good build up play.
It was much of the same in the second half and Iquique double their advantage in the 61st minute as Misael Dávila was first to pounce on a loose ball in the penalty area. Comfortable with their 2-0 lead Iquique controlled much of the remaining play although Nacional’s Alexander Medina had a chance to pull one back in the 78th minute but it wasn’t to be and when the referee blew his whistle for full time the score was still 2-0 to the home side.
The return leg will be played in Montevideo on the 14th August.
