Universidad Católica got their 2012 Copa Sudamericana campaign underway with a 1-1 away to Bolivian side Blooming with both goals coming within minutes of each other around the hour mark.
The opening half was a fairly even affair with both teams’ defensives dominating proceedings. Blooming had the best chance to open the scoring in the 40th minute when Hugo Bargas forced a fine save out of Universidad Católica Cristopher Toselli but apart from that the chances were few and far between.
It was the visitors who opened the scoring thirteen minutes into the second half as a quick ball to Álvaro Ramos after a mistake in the Blooming midfield allowed the former Iquique player to beat his defender and fire home past Blooming goalkeeper Sergio Galarza. The joy at opening at opening the scoring was short lived for los cruzados as the Bolivians hit back two minutes later courtesy of a Limbert Méndez header from a corner with Cristopher Toselli caught in no man’s land.
Universidad Católica had a number of chances to take an advantage into the second leg with a volley from Francisco Silva being deflected wide of the mark before Michael Ríos had a chance of his own in injury time but it wasn’t to be at the match ended 1-all.
The return leg will be played next Thursday in the Estadio San Carlos de Apoquimbo, where los cruzados will be comfortable of progressing as no Bolivian side has won there.
