Round five of the Clausura season saw a managerial mistake cost Unión Española a point against fierce rival Universidad Católica whilst Rangers maintained their position at the top of the table as they were the only team in the top five to grab all three points on the weekend.
Unión San Felipe moved off the bottom of the Clausura table after defeating Antofagasta 2-1 in the round’s opening match with goals to Juan Tolozo and Luis Romero allowing San Felipe to pick up their first win of the season and join six team logjam of teams on four points after five rounds.
Saturday’s action kicked off with the clásico de colonias between Palestino and Audax Italiano and unfortunately for fans of both teams the match ended goalless. Following that match Rangers maintained the position at the top of the table after a 1-0 defeat of Cobreloa with an Andrés Oroz goal after five minutes proving to be the difference. Next up Santiago Wanderers and La Serena shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw before Huachipato continued Iquique recent run of poor form in the day’s last match with a 4-1 defeat.
Sunday saw three 1-all draws, although one as you will read later won’t be recorded as such, with Cobresal continued their undefeated start to the season with a 1-1 draw with Unión La Calera before Universidad de Concepción shared the spoils with Colo Colo.
Whilst the scoresheet may have read 1-all between Universidad Católica and Unión Española in the round’s final match the result will be recorded as a 3-0 win to los cruzados after a mistake by Unión’s manager José Luis Sierra saw los hispanos have six foreigners on the pitch at one stage instead of the regulatory five. Unión Española also copped a 500 UF fine for their troubles.
