Goals were at a premium in the sixth round of the Clausura with six of the nine matches decided by a solitary goal and four of those six matches finished in 1-nil victories. The only team to buck the trend were O’Higgins who bounced back from their Copa Sudamericana exit by putting four past the lowly Universidad de Concepción.
In the weekend’s opening match Iquique bounced back from its recent run of bad form with 1-nil victory over Audax Italiano. For the northerners it was their first win in the Estadio Bicentenario La Florida for over fourteen years and they had an eighteenth minute goal from Federico León to thank for that.
In Saturday’s first match, Unión Española bounced back from the debacle that was last week’s match as they defeated Palestino 1-nil in the clásico de colonias. In the day’s next match Universidad de Chile brought Cobresal’s unbeaten run to an end with a 2-1 defeat with two goals to Enzo Gutiérrez in the 79th and 85th minutes sealing the victory for los azules. Scarily for the rest of the Primera Division, La U are now in third place with two games still in hand and only four points behind leaders Rangers. The day’s other two matches saw Huachipato defeat Unión San Felipe 1-nil whilst La Serena and Cobreloa shared the spoils in a goalless draw.
Sunday saw an early start with two games kicking off at midday and it was wins for both the home sides as Antofagasta defeat Unión La Calera 2-1 and Rangers maintained their lead at the top of the table with a victory over Universidad Católica by a solitary goal. In the day’s next match O’Higgins bounced back from their Copa Sudamericana exit with 4-1 thrashing of Universidad de Concepción, a result which left las penguistas on the bottom of the table. The round was brought to an end in the Estadio Monumental as Colo Colo snatched a 1-all draw with Santiago Wanderers despite finishing the match with nine men, continuing their recent run of poor discipline.
