To say that the Clausura table is a little congested is somewhat of an understatement as after seven rounds of competition five points separates top-placed Rangers from eleventh placed Cobresal, who only a couple of weeks ago were challenging the team from Talca for the top position. As for Rangers they suffered their first loss of the campaign whilst the La U juggernaut continued as they move into second place whilst another win to their rivals Universidad Católica saw them move into third position. It isn’t looking so good for the third of the big three as Colo Colo made it six games without a win.
In the round’s opening match Huachipato made it three wins in a row with 2-0 defeat of Unión Española courtesy of first half goals to Jose Contreras and Cesar Cortés. The win sees the side from Talcahuano move to fourth position whilst their opponents dropped from third to eighth following the result.
Saturday’s opening match saw Rangers fall to their first defeat of the season as they went down 4-1 to Palestino in the Estadio La Cisterna. Goals to Diego Chaves, Lucas Simón, Alejandro Carrasco and Roberto Ávalos did the damage for the home side whilst David Llanos got the only goal for the visitors. The day’s second match saw Universidad de Chile maintain their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-1 win over Audax Italiano courtesy of an 88th minuter winner from Guillermo Marino. In the day’s last two matches Unión San Felipe pulled off a shock 3-1 defeat of Unión La Calera before Antofagasta defeated Santiago Wanderers 1-0 courtesy of a Eladio Herrera own goal.
It was action aplenty in the north of the country on Sunday with four games kicking off at 4pm. Colo Colo made it six wins without a loss as they were held to a 1-all draw by La Serena. It was the fourth consecutive 1-all draw for los albos and their fifth such result in a stuttering start to their Clausura campaign. Iquique made it two wins in a row coming from two goals down to defeat fellow northerners Cobresal 3-2, inflicting on them their second successive loss. Cobreloa ensured that Univesidad de Concepción would remain winless for the season and rooted to the bottom of the table with a comfortable 3-1 win. The weekend’s proceedings drew to a close in the capital as Universidad Católica moved to third on the table with 1-0 defeat of O’Higgins courtesy of 42nd minute goal from Álvaro Ramos.
