The eighth round of the Clausura season saw Universidad de Chile suffer their first loss of the season whilst at the other end of the spectrum Universidad de Concepción picked up their first win of the season. Top of the table Rangers extended their lead at the top with their fifth win of the season as second placed Universidad Católica needed a last minute equaliser to stay in touch.
In the round’s first match Universidad de Concepción picked up their first win of the Clausura season with a 3-1 victory over La Serena with new coach Fernando Díaz tasting success in his first game in charge.
In Saturday’s opener Universidad de Chile suffered its first loss of the season as they crashed 5-2 to Unión Española. After the scores were locked at 2-all at the half three second half goals to los hispanos triumph over the the Apertura champions with Sebastián Jaime grabbing a brace. A single Diego Chaves goal saw Palestino ensure that Cobresal suffered their third successive loss, a loss which sees the northerners return to the bottom of the annual table whilst Colo Colo won their first game in six encounters after they defeated Cobreloa 3-1.
In the last two matches of the day Iquique defeated O’Higgins 1-0 whilst Unión San Felipe grabbed an important win over Santiago Wanderers by the same scoreline. The result means Wanderers are the only side to register a win for the season and currently sit bottom of the Clausura table and more worryingly are three points from safety in the annual table.
Sunday saw Antofagasta grab a crucial 3-nil victory over Huachipato with the win propelling the northern-based side into fourth position on the table. Rangers stretched their lead to three points at the top of the table with a 1-nil victory over Audax Italiano as second placed Universidad Católica needed a 92nd minute Daud Gazale goal to snatch a 1-all draw with Unión La Calera.
