Universidad Católica took a big step to making it to the third round of the Copa Sudamericana after defeating Colombian side Deportes Tolima 2-0 overnight in the first leg of their tie.
Goals to Nicolás Trecco, who has been in the news for all the wrong reasons of late, and Michael Ríos in each half were enough for los cruzados to grab the advantage for the return leg. Trecco’s goal came in the 36th minute after Tolima’s goalkeeper Antony Silva made a hash of an attempted clearance leaving the midfielder with an open goal at which to aim.
Ríos’ goal came in the 66th minute after excellent build up play from Álvaro Ramos. It was a dramatic turnaround for Ríos who only three minutes earlier had upended Yimmi Chará in the penalty area. Fortunately Universidad Católica goalkeeper Cristopher Toselli was up to the task as he saved the penalty of Manuel Maciel, who had played previously played for Chilean sides Fernández Vial, Universidad de Concepción and Puerto Montt.
The return leg will be played on the 18th of September.
