Rangers and La U maintain positions at the top

Clausura surprise packets Rangers maintained their lead at the top of the table following the conclusion of Round Nine as they picked up their sixth win of the season whilst three points back Universidad de Chile kept up the pressure with a win of their own. Universidad Católica, who were in third place before the start of the round, dropped back to the chasing pack as they went down to Iquique in a five goal thriller, a win which saw the northerners take their opponents’ place on the table.

Both Audax Italiano and Cobresal brought their three match losing streaks to an end in the opening match of Round Nine as they fought out a 1-all draw in the Estadio Bicentenario La Florida. Audax opened the scoring in the 61st minute courtesy of Felipe Mora before Miguel Ángel Cuellar cancelled it out seventeen minutes later.

Saturday saw six matches take place with Santiago Wanderers winning its first match of the campaign in the day’s opening match as they defeated Universidad de Concepción 3-1. Next up were two games in the north of the country with Iquique defeating Universidad Católica 3-2 in a five goal thriller whilst in a clásico nortino, Cobreloa warmed up for their mid-week catch up game against Universidad de Chile with a 3-1 win over Antofagasta.

The day’s next two games involved the two teams at the top of the table with both Rangers and Universidad de Chile picking up wins over Huachipato and Unión San Felipe respectively to maintain their positions of number one and two on the table. In the day’s last match an 89th minute goal to Cristián Reynero saw La Serena score an upset 2-1 win over Unión Española.

Sunday saw the final two matches of the round take place with Unión La Calera and O’Higgins sharing the spoils in a goalless draw in the day’s opening match before a brace to Felipe Flores helped Colo Colo make it two wins in a row with 3-0 defeat of Palestino.
