Universidad Católica have advanced to the Round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana despite losing to Colombian side Deportes Tolima 3-1 in the second leg of their tie. They advanced on the away goals rule after the tie ended 3-3 on aggregate and have Tomás Costa to thank for their progression.
The home side who were looking to overturn a two goal deficit from the first leg, started much the stronger of the two teams putting the goal of Cristopher Toselli under siege for long periods of time. This pressure paid off in the 31st minute as Fernando Cordero deflected a long range effort from Félix Noguera into the back of his own net, completely wrong footing Toselli in the process. Eleven minutes later Tolima were back on level terms in the tie when Gerardo Vallejo was put through by Cristián Marrugo before firing past Toselli at his near post.
Early in the second half it looked like that the home side would be advancing to the next stage of the competition when Robin Ramírez put Tolima up 3-0 up in the 49th minute, again beating Toselli at his near post. However four minutes later Universidad Católica were back in the contest when a long range shot from Tomás Costa found its way through a sea of players to level the tie 3-all on aggregate. And that’s the way the tie when referee Víctor Rivera blew his whistle for full time just over forty minutes later.
