Universidad de Chile have joined Universidad Católica in the quarter finals of the Copa Sudamericana after they defeated Ecuadorian side Emelec 1-0 in the second leg of their round of 16 clash to progress 3-2 on aggregate.
It was a 57th minute goal from Enzo Gutiérrez that proved to be the difference between the two sides whilst at the other end of the pitch Paulo Garcés, who got a rare start for La U, ensured that their title defence was still on track with a number of crucial saves.
After the match Universidad de Chile manager Jorge Sampaoli said, “Our idea was to spend as much time as we could in our attacking half, but it didn’t quite turn out as planned. During the first half our opponents pressed higher, so we had to change our strategy to win. It was difficult to play because of the pressure that they established. We wanted more control of the game, but they did not allow it. Sometimes we were overwhelmed.”
Universidad de Chile will meet Brazilian side Sao Paulo in the next round of the competition.
