Whilst the penultimate round of the Clausura sees a number of teams looking to either consolidate their position in the top eight or try to avoid relegation most of the attention will be focused on Santiago on Sunday afternoon as the clásico universitario takes place between Universidad de Chile and Universidad Católica.
Rangers will be looking to be looking to bounce back from their last start loss which saw them lose top as they take on lowly Universidad de Concepción in the opening match of Round 16. Whilst Rangers will be looking to consolidate a top three position their opponents will be looking to get out of their relegation playoff spot.
Saturday’s action kicks off on in the north of the country as Antofagasta plays host to Colo Colo who themselves will be looking to make amends for their first loss in ten matches and in the process keep the pressure on the top three. Palestino will be looking to maintain their position at the top of the table when they host Unión San Felipe in the day’s next match. San Felipe for their part will be another team looking to escape the threat of relegation. Another two teams who are currently in the automatic relegation spots are Cobresal and La Serena and they face off in the north of the country at the same time as the aforementioned match in a crucial match in terms of their survival in the top flight of Chilean football.
The action in the north of Chile continues later in the day as Unión Española look to maintain their faint hopes of playoff action when they take on Iquique, who surprisingly sacked their manager Fernando Vergara during the week. The day’s action is brought to an end in the nation’s capital as Audax Italiano play host to O’Higgins and with the two teams sitting in 9th and 10th respectively they will be hoping a win might ensure them a playoff position.
Whilst Cobreloa take on Santiago Wanderers at 4pm on Sunday afternoon they will be struggling for attention as the nation’s football focus will be on the clásico universitario between Universidad de Chile and Universidad Católica at the same time. Both teams are differing fortunes in the Copa Sudamericana midweek but that will be all forgotten on Sunday as both teams look to consolidate their positions in the top eight. The day’s last match sees Unión La Calera host Huachipato.
