Colo Colo moves to the top as those around it stumble

Colo Colo took advantage of losses to Rangers, Palestino and Iquique to move to the top of the Clausura table with only one round to play whilst La Serena became the first team relegated to Primera B as it was of the few teams at the base of the table to not pick up a win.

The round kicked off in Concepción on Friday night and it was a solitary goal in the first minute to Pedro Muñoz that saw Universidad de Concepción defeat Rangers 1-0. The win for the home side gives them hope of avoiding a relegation playoff spot going into next week’s final round of matches whilst for Rangers it was their second successive loss.

In Saturday’s opening match goals to Carlos Muñoz and Christian Wilches were enough for Colo Colo to bounce back from last week’s defeat to Unión San Felipe as they defeated Antofagasta 2-1, and in the process severely dented the northerners chances of making the playoffs. The aforementioned San Felipe for their part made it two wins in a row with another top end of the table scalp as they defeated Palestino 2-1. Meanwhile La Serena were confirmed as the first team to be relegated to Primera B as their 2-all draw with Cobresal wasn’t enough to ensure their safety for another week.

Three goals in seven minutes went a long way to helping Unión Española defeat Iquique 4-2 and maintained a glimmer of hope of making the playoffs for los hispanos in the day’s next match before a brace to Sebastián Sáez helped Audax Italiano put five goals past O’Higgins in a big step towards ensuring post season action.

Whilst much of Sunday’s attention was focused on the clásico universitario between Universidad de Chile and Universidad Católica, which coincidentally finished in a scoreless draw, there was also action in the north of the country at the same time as Cobreloa played host to Santiago Wanderers. A 4-2 win to Santiago Wanderers saw them maintain their position just outside the relegation playoff positions. In the weekend’s last match Huachipato defeated Unión La Calera 2-0 to ensure they will be seeing some post-regular season action.
