Universidad Católica grabbed a hard fought 1-all draw with Copa Sudamericana favourites São Paulo in front of their home fans overnight with goalkeeper Cristopher Toselli proving to be a hero as he kept the visitors at bay.
In the opening half São Paulo wasted wasted a hatful chances but did manage to opening the scoring courtesy of a precise header from defender Rafael Toloi, who was left completely unmarked. Los cruzados had goalkeeper Cristopher Toselli to thank for keeping them in the game as he made three crucial saves in an outstanding performance.
In the second half, Universidad Católica manager Martin Lasarte made some positive substitutions as he sent on Paraguayan forward Roberto Olvelar as well as Fernando Meneses. And they were rewarded for their positive intent in the 69th minute when Nicolas Castillo levelled things up.
“We gave them the ball and suffered a lot in the first half, but we reacted after the half-time and I think we deserved the draw and maybe something more,” said man-of-the-match Toselli.
The return leg will be played next Wednesday in São Paulo.
