La U crash out of title race as final four decided

The final four teams have now been decided in the Clausura season with Colo Colo surviving a nine goal thriller whilst Universidad de Chile’s dream of a fourth consecutive title was halted by Unión Española. Joining them in the semi-finals will be Huachipato and Rangers.

In the weekend’s first match Huachipato progressed to the semi-finals after defeating Palestino 2-1 in the Estadio La Cisterna on Saturday afternoon thus winning the tie 3-2 on aggregate.

As the lower ranked team and following the 1-all draw in the first leg, Huachipato needed a win to progress to the next stage off the competition. After a tense opening half, which saw much asof the play take place in the midfield they took the lead in the shadows of half time courtesy of Manuel Villalobos.

Shortly after the break Huachipato doubled their advantage as César Cortés got on the end of a Brain Rodriguez cross that left Palestino goalkeeper Felipe Nuñez with no chance. Palestino did manage to find the back of the net in the 92nd minute courtesy of Samuel Tueber and Alejandro Carrasco had a chance to equalise shortly after but was denied by Huachipato ‘keeper Nery Veloso.

In the weekend’s next match Colo Colo progressed to the semi-finals despite losing to Audax Italiano in a nine goal thriller.

Going into the match with a two goal advantage it didn’t take long for Colo Colo to extend that lead via a fifth minute goal to Rodrigo Millar. Much like the first leg Audax dominated much of the play and in the fourteenth minute they were level on the night thanks to Sebastián Sáez before Gonzalo Fierro put los albos back in front in the 41st minute.

With fifteen minutes to go in the second half it looked like Audax would pull off an unlikely upset after they jumped to a 5-2 lead courtesy of goals to Sáez, who completed his hat-trick with goals in the 54th and 62nd minutes, Gadamiel Garcia and Felipe Mora. However two goals to Mauro Olivi in the 80th and 93rd minutes put paid to any hope and despite losing 5-4 on the night Colo Colo progressed 6-5 on aggregate.

Sunday’s opening match saw the first big upset of the Clausura playoffs as Universidad de Chile’s dreams of securing a fourth straight domestic title came to a crashing halt at the hands of Unión Española.

Following a 0-0 draw in the first leg Universidad de Chile knew that a win or a draw would be enough for them to progress to the semi-finals and they got off to the start they needed as Sebastián Ubilla found the back of the net in the fourteenth minute. That proved to be the only score for the half but Unión would have felt aggrieved not to be on level terms going into the break as a penalty claim for a handball by José Rojas were waved away.

However any feelings of disappointment soon disappeared in the second half as first Sebastián Jaime levelled things up in the 51st minute and then former La U player Emilio Hernández put them ahead in the 75th minute. Sandwiched between the two goals was the sending off of Universidad de Chile’s Paulo Magalhaes which severely dented their chances of mounting a comeback. Five minutes before full time Patricio Rubio put Unión up 3-1 before adding another in the 90th minute to put the final nail in the coffin of La U’s championship hopes.

In the weekend’s final match Rangers de Talca became the last team to qualify for the semi-finals as they defeated Iquique 1-0 to progress 2-0 on aggregate.

Despite dominating much of the match Iquique couldn’t find their way through a resolute Rangers defence. It wasn’t until the final minute of the match that Rangers scored the only goal of the match as Felipe Reynero spectacularly took advantage of the fact that Iquique goalkeeper Rodrigo Naranjo had come up for a corner as he lobbed the ball into the back of the net from near the halfway line.
