In the opening half Unión Española controlled much of the play and dominated the possession statistics with Emiliano Vecchio and Patricio Rubio both having chances to open the scoring in the 11th and 26th minutes respectively. However, they really should have had a chance to open the scoring in the 28th minute when. Vecchio was brought down in the area but referee Jorge Osorio adjudged that the Argentinean had dived and promptly booked him much to the amazement of many of the those watching the match.
Adding to conspiracy theories that Osorio was doing his best to help the home side he awarded los albos an indirect free kick in the penalty area in the 43rd minute after he adjudged that Unión Española goalkeeper Eduardo Lobos had held onto the ball too long. Fortunately for la furia roja their opponents were unable to convert their opportunity.
Early in the second half first leg goalscorer José Pedro Fuenzalida replaced Juan Guilllermo Domínguez and had a chance not long after to open the scoring. Unión also had their chances with Sebastián Jaime somehow contriving to miss an open goal from a couple of metres out in the 57th minute.
However in the 77th minute la furia roja put the tie beyond doubt when Braulio Leal got on the end of a brilliant pass from Vecchio to open the scoring. Six minutes later Rodolfo Madrid put the icing on the cake with a brilliant free kick.
Colo Colo 0-2 Unión Española
In the other semi-final Huachipato joined Unión Española in the final after drawing 1-all with Rangers de Talca to progress 2-1 on aggregate. This was the first time that Huachipato has made it to the final since the playoff system was introduced.
Having finished the regular season higher on the table Rangers only needed to draw the tie to progress to the final. They had plenty of chances in the first half to open the scoring in the first half but they found Huachipato goalkeeper Nery Veloso in fine form as he denied them with five excellent saves.
To make matters worse for Rangers, their opponents took the lead in the 54th minute courtesy of Braian Rodríguez which meant they then had to score two goals to progress to the final. They did manage to score one of those goals but it all came too late when David Llanos levelled the scores in the 90th minute.
