Early season congestion

As is often the case there is some early season congestion at the top of the table with four teams on exactly the same record at the top of the table after two rounds.

An 89th minute equaliser from Gabriel Vargas saw Universidad de Concepción grab a 2-all draw with Audax Italiano in the opening match of Round Two. The result was the second successive draw for both teams and leaves them mid-table with two points apiece. In Friday’s other match Iquique bounced back from their controversial loss to Colo Colo last start to defeat fellow northerners Antofagasta 2-1 with goals from Sebastián Ereros and Cristián Bogado cancelling out Daniel Arismendi’s opener for visitors.

Saturday saw Cobresal pick up their first win of the season with a 2-1 win over Unión Española whose goalkeeper Eduardo Lobos opened the scoring from the penalty spot. The win sees Cobresal in fourth position on the table and they will need more wins like that if are going to pull themselves out of the relegation zone. Their clásico del cobre rivals, Cobreloa weren’t so fortunate as they went 1-0 to Unión La Calera in the other four o’clock kick off. Martín Lasarte got his first win as Universidad Católica manager as los cruzados saw off Santiago Wanderers 3-2 in the Estadio San Carlos de Apoquimbo. The days proceedings were brought to an end in the south of the country as Huachipato and Palestino shared the spoils in a 1-all draw.

Sunday saw two matches take place with O’Higgins sharing the spoils with Colo Colo in a 1-all draw with both goals coming in the first ten minutes. However the match was overshadowed by the death of Colo Colo fan, Francisco Javier Figueroa Muñoz, outside the match in what is believed to be an incident between Colo Colo barra bravas. In the day’s other match Rangers defeated Unión San Felipe 1-0 courtesy of a 91st minute goal to Andrés Oroz.

The round came to an end on Monday afternoon as three second half goals saw Universidad de Chile defeat La Serena 5-2 in the Estadio Santa Laura to kick off their campaign to make it four championships in a row. The match also saw the debut of Enzo Gutiérrez for los azules, whose last match had been against La U in the Apertura final. Gutiérrez capped off his debut with a goal in the 92nd minute.
